Newly Admitted Students
Work Study Students: iWork, PAS, Hukilau, Robert Gay
Previously admitted, Returning, or Off-campus Students

There will be very limited on-campus housing options for the 2023-24 academic year. It is important for students to be informed of the proper process they should engage in to secure on-campus housing and the appropriate deadlines. Students that do not engage in the correct process by the appropriate deadlines will have a lower likelihood of being able to secure on-campus housing.

Housing availability and processes will be determined by your admission and student type. Select your student type on the tabs above to determine your specific process. We understand that this process is complex. If you need any help determining which process you should engage in, please contact the Residential Life office through email, housing@byuh.edu, or by phone at (808) 675-3534.

Information for all Students seeking Single On-campus Housing

Room-type Eligibility

If you are offered a spot in on-campus housing, your offered room type will be first based on your eligibility, then on availability. Because housing is so limited, your ideal room and room type may not be available.

  • Apartment-style: upperclassmen.
  • Dorm-style: freshmen/first-year.
Check-in Week

Students with a contract may check in any day during the check-in period (see below). Students will not be permitted to check in earlier or later than the check-in period. Students may make travel arrangements to arrive during the check-in period as soon as they sign a contract.

Work Study (iWork, PAS, Hukilau, Robert Gay) Check-In Period: August 14-29, 2023
A nightly rate will be charged to a student's account if they check in before the contract start date: August 21, 2023.

New Resident Check-In Period: August 21-29, 2023

Reserving a Check-in Appointment

All students must check in during Hale office hours: Monday-Friday, 9 am-6 pm. After being assigned a room, students must book a check-in appointment. The number of check-ins allowed per hour will be limited. If your desired check-in time is booked, please select the next available time slot.

Limited 'after-hours' check-ins may be available for international students with limited flight availability.

What if my family will be dropping me off?

Families and friends traveling with their students are permitted to help their students check-in. If you will have help at check-in, please make sure to indicate how many will be arriving when booking your check-in appointment.

Housing availability and the processes will be determined by student type. Return to the tabs at the top of the page to determine what process you should follow.

Work study students (iWork, PAS, Hukilau, Robert Gay) living in the hales for the Spring 2023 Semester will have the opportunity to renew their contract in the month of May if they need to live in the hales for the Fall 2023 Semester.

If work study residents miss the 'renew contract' deadline and are still interested in living in the hales for the Fall 2023 Semester, they must apply to the Fall 2023 Single On-campus Housing Waitlist.

All other residents (not on a work study program) interested in living in the hales for the Summer and/or Fall 2023 Semester must apply to the Fall 2023 Single On-campus Housing Waitlist.

Residents leaving for an internship or getting married who need housing for part of summer break may submit an appeal on the Housing Portal. These students should not renew, as they will be held to the contract termination terms and may incur fines.

Residents that Receive an Invitation

If you are living in the Hales for the Spring 2023 Semester and are invited to a contract for fall 2023, you may choose if you would like housing for summer break and fall or fall only.

Can I stay in the same room I am currently in?

If you are invited in the first round of invitations (June 6), choose a summer and fall contract, and your room will be open for summer, you will be eligible to remain in your current room.

If you are invited in the first round of invitations (June 6), choose a fall only contract, and your room will be closed for summer, you will be eligible to remain in your current room.

Can I choose a new room?

If you do not want to stay in the same room, your room is closed or you are invited after the first week, you may choose another room.

Every summer, spring residents who have a contract for the Fall 2023 Semester are given the chance to change their room to any available room in the hales. Students in a dorm-style hale will have the chance to move to an apartment-style hale. Students who secure a contract for the summer break and fall or fall only contract period can change their room during Change Room Week, starting at 12:00 am on June 8 until June 16 at 11:59 pm. You must accept an invitation first before you can choose a new room.

Are any hales closing for Fall 2023?

Some hales will be closing for summer consolidation. Depending on your current hale, you may be required to change rooms and transfer if your room will be closing. Students in this situation will be able to choose the room they will transfer to during Change Room Week after they sign a contract. Students required to transfer, but who do not choose their own room to transfer to, will have their new room chosen for them. For a list and more information, go to the “Consolidation” at the bottom of the page.

How to Apply to Waitlist

Application Fee

All interested students must pay a non-refundable $50 hale application fee to apply for single-student on-campus housing. The application fee is not due at the time of application to the waitlist. The fee will be charged to your student account after you have signed a contract, within seven business days. Once posted to your student account, you may make a payment online.

To make a payment, please follow the instructions on the BYUH Financial Services How to Make a Payment Online page. Unpaid fees will result in a hold on your account that could prevent registration.

Room-type Eligibility

If you are offered a spot in on-campus housing, your offered room type will be first based on your eligibility, then on availability. Because housing is so limited, your ideal room and room type may not be available.

Apartment-style: upperclassmen.
Dorm-style: freshmen/first-year.

Sorting Groups

Students who apply to the waitlist will be sorted into the following 'sorting groups’:

Group 1: work-study students. This includes all students newly accepted into a work-study program or current work-study students.

Group 2: self-funded first-year students. This includes students required to live on campus under the ‘Single Student Freshman and Transfer Housing Policy.’ Students in this group will be assigned to freshman housing. This excludes students who have a Spring 2023 Semester hale contract.

Group 3: all other students. This includes students living on or off-campus, students admitted prior to spring 2023, and students who took a leave of absence for the Spring 2023 Semester or deferred.

Credit Requirement

Along with the sorting groups above, you must be registered as a full-time student (twelve credits with at least one face-to-face credit) for the Fall 2023 Semester at the time of invitation in order to be eligible to be invited. Waitlisted classes do not count toward the credit total.

You do not have to register at the time of application, but you must be registered by the time of invitations. We know you cannot register for classes until your open date, but we want you to be prepared to register as soon as possible.

What does that mean?

  • Make sure you have no holds on your account that would prevent you from registering.
  • Plan your semester out with your MAP or an academic advisor

New international students required to take an EIL test before registering will be registered in a placeholder class that will qualify as full-time credits.

Remember!

  • Waitlisted classes do not count toward the credit total.
  • If you are below twelve credits because you are graduating in the Fall 2023 Semester, request a Reduced Course Load Form through HANDSHAKE experiences. For more information, visit the Reduced Course Load Request webpage.

Invitation Process

The waitlist will be sorted by the following criteria:

  1. Credit requirement (yes or no).
  2. Sorting group.
  3. Date of application.

If you meet the criteria and there is availability in a room you are eligible for, you will be sent an invitation to your go.byuh.edu email. Students will have 48 hours to accept the offer. Invitations are sent out on Tuesdays by 3 pm HST and the deadline to respond is Thursday at 3 pm HST.

Once you receive an email, you will have access to accept the offer online on the Housing Portal. You will not have access until you receive the email. We will always email your BYUH email. Please make sure your BYUH email is working BEFORE the invitation period. For email issues, please fill out an IT service request.

We will continue to send invitations each week if there are any availabilities.

Invitations to on-campus housing will start on June 6, 2023.

Remember!

  • Invitations are sent to your go.byuh.edu email address.
  • You will only have 48 hours to respond, so check your emails regularly!

If you miss the deadline to accept your invitation but are still interested in housing, you will need to re-apply. You will have a new date.

Off-campus Housing

Students looking for off-campus housing must find and secure contracts on their own.

Reserve a Room

Single students who are admitted as new freshmen or first-year students for the Fall 2023 Semester may complete a housing application with the Reserve a Room  process to secure housing. The process will be open on March 1, 2023, and close on July 1, 2023.

Newly admitted sponsored students will receive an email to secure housing once they have access to Reserve a Room. Those that receive an email must complete the Reserve a room process before July 1, 2023.

Housing availability is limited. Once freshmen and first-year student housing has been filled, students may apply to the Fall 2023 Single On-campus Housing Waitlist. Please refer to the JOIN THE WAITLIST tab for directions on how to apply if freshmen housing is filled.

Housing Assignments

After the reserve a room deadline, the housing assignment coordinator will assign students based on their roommate matching preferences.

Freshmen and first-year students typically are assigned to first-year dorm residence halls without kitchens and are therefore required to have a meal plan. There are no requests for specific buildings or rooms.

How to Reserve a Room

  1. Log on to the Housing Portal.
  2. Select 'Secure Housing.'
  3. Select 'Hales.'
  4. Select 'Reserve a Room' and complete the process.

Once you have successfully reserved a room, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not have access to the reserve a room process on the portal, you are not eligible to reserve a room.

THERE ARE 5 PARTS TO THE 'RESERVE A ROOM' PROCESS

  • Update personal profile.
  • Select meal plan preference.
  • Complete a roommate matching survey.
  • Sign a Hale contract.
  • Pay $50 non-refundable application fee, charged to your student account within 7 business days.

Waitlist

Once all first-year student housing has been filled, students may apply to the Fall 2023 Single On-campus Housing Waitlist. Please refer to the JOIN THE WAITLIST tab for directions on how to apply if first-year student housing is filled.

Housing is not guaranteed, and students must make every effort to secure housing in a timely manner. If you are unable to secure on-campus housing due to a late application, you may need to appeal to live in off-campus housing and secure off-campus housing on your own. This option is only available when all on-campus housing is filled. If your appeal is not approved, you will be reported for violation of the ‘Single Student Freshman and Transfer Housing Policy’.

Updating Your Application

You can update your application any time before the reserve a room deadline, July 1, 2023.

  1. Log on to the Housing Portal.
  2. Select 'Secure Housing.'

You will also get the chance to learn more about your new roommate and what they wrote for their 'about me' and 'interests' statements.

Spring and Summer Consolidation

The spring and summer have much fewer students living in the hales. To accommodate summer programs, maintenance, and repairs: major room reassignments are required.

  • In order to uphold the quality and condition of the Hales, regular maintenance and repairs are necessary. Certain hales may be closed during the spring and summer periods in order to allow for these renovations to take place.

The University often hosts summer programs that require on-campus housing. To increase efficiency and organization. Students may be consolidated to certain hales or floors to accommodate these visitors.
  • Consolidation is determined by the number of residents who renew their contracts. If demand for more space is given, the Residential Life and Housing Operations departments may determine a need to leave one or more of the closing Hales open. It is very important for residents to renew their contract if they are considering living on-campus for the spring semester and/or summer break.
  • Students will be notified once the Residential Life and Housing Operations departments determine which hales need to be closed for maintenance and repair. If you happen to live in one of these hales, you will have the opportunity to renew your contract and then change your room during Change Room Week.

It is very important that you first renew your contract!
  • Freshman residents who are residing in Hales that are closing will be able to change their rooms to either dorm-style or apartment-style, even if they are still freshmen!

Apartment style Hales will give you access to a kitchen which means you will not be required to purchase a meal plan.

If your Hale is closing, you will be able to move to apartment style Hales as long as there are spaces available. Change room is done on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Please note that Hale 10 is only available for women with 55+ credits.

Anticipated Closures due to consolidation

Spring 2023 Closures Summer 2023 Closures
  • Hale 2, second floor
  • Hale 9 will close for women and be allocated as a men’s hale to accommodate the Hale 2 closure.
To be determined by May 1.

All hales will reopen for fall 2023.
