Getting Around Laie

  • Hawaii has one of the country's best public bus transit system. Bus routes and schedules can be picked up at the Aloha Center Front Desk area or online at www.thebus.org/
  • BYU-Hawaii offers a car rental service through Enterprise CarShare. For a $25 yearly membership fee, students can rent cars starting at $8 per hour or $70 a day.
  • For students interested in biking or riding mopeds around campus and Laie, there are plenty of bike racks located around campus. Students will need to purchase a bicycle parking permit through Campus Public Safety.
  • With so many other transportation options available, most students find they do not need a car on campus. Students who wish to park on campus must purchase a permit through Campus Public Safety.
  • Security provides the Aloha Late Night Shuttle Service for all students free of charge. This service is provided Monday - Saturday at 10:00 pm - 12:00 am (midnight) and to students who live off-campus in Laie, Hauula, Punaluu, or Kahuku. Students can sign up for a shuttle ride at the Security office located at McKay Building 148.

Shopping

There are a few options for grocery and supply shopping located around the island of Oahu, below is a list of locations within an hour from campus.
  • (0.7 miles from BYU–Hawaii)


    Located within walking distance from campus, the Laie Shopping Center provides a central location for students who need to do grocery shopping or would like to grab a bite to eat. A few of the shops and restaurants located within the shopping center are L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Angels Ice-cream, Laie Cinemas, and Jeans Warehouse.

    A little down the road is the Hauula Shopping Center which includes Longs Drugs and Tamuras, a drugstore and grocery store within a few miles of campus. A very popular local restaurant called Papa Ole's is located within this shopping center.

    The closest shopping mall is located about 45 minutes from campus, located in Kaneohe. The bus system takes you directly in front of the mall. Inside the mall are shopping stores like Journeys and Macy's, as well as restaurants and a movie theatre.
  • Mililani Town (32 miles from BYU–Hawaii)


    Costco and Walmart are located around the island of Oahu, but the closest stores are located in Mililani Town, about 45 minutes from campus. Costco offers a wide variety of groceries, clothing, supplies, and much more in bulk, for lower prices. Walmart offers similar prices in groceries as Foodland or Tamuras, but clothing, supplies, and non-perishables have much lower prices. The bus system can easily take students to both options.

Dining

Local dining options can be found on and off-campus.
  • Students can enjoy food through Food Services at The Club or the Seasider Grill, which are both open to the public.

    Students who purchase meal plans through Food Services go to The Club to eat Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. The salad bar, waffles, fruit, and cereal are offered during open hours, while full meals are served during specific hours.

    The Seasider Grill is open from 10 am - 10 pm and offers a wide range of food, from fresh sandwiches to chicken pad-thai. All food at the grill is made-to-order.

    Vending machines are located throughout campus for quick snacks between classes.
  • Laie offers a central location to many eateries in the area, both fast food and fine dining.

    Located at the Laie Shopping Center, you can find anything from Taco Bell to Subway to a famous local burger joint called Seven Brothers.

    Right down the road, there is a McDonalds within walking distance of campus or Pounders Restaurant and other food trucks located in the Polynesian Cultural Center Marketplace.

    A little bit further from campus, North Shore Tacos in Hauula offers a local twist on Mexican food and going towards the North Shore you can find a cluster of diverse food trucks at the Sugar Mill in Kahuku, including world-famous shrimp truck “Giovanni’s”.

    About a mile past Giovanni's is a fresh produce cafeteria called Kahuku Farm Fresh Café, where they offer fresh vegetarian options, fruits for purchase off the farm and delicious smoothies.

Other Things to Know

  • In Laie, there is no shortage of activities to keep you busy! From hiking to beautiful waterfalls that are tucked in the vast mountains behind campus, to lounging around the beach across the street from campus, you will find something to do.

    On-campus clubs such as the Outdoor Adventure Club or Dive Club where you can explore the mountains to the seas with friends and classmates from BYU–Hawaii. BYU–Hawaii also hosts a number of fitness classes, including Yoga, Zumba, Water-Aerobics and many more for a fun outlet for students and members of the community to gain friends while staying healthy. If you aren’t into adventures in the mountain or oceans, there are plenty of options for you too! Enjoy the Laie Temple within walking distance from campus, and the beauty that is present in the Temple Visitors Center. For movie fanatics, Polynesian Cultural Center hosts a movie night on the first Friday of every month where you can sit under the stars and watch popular family films.
  • Students of BYU–Hawaii are lucky to be able to take advantage of many Kama’aina (directly means “Child of the Land” or in-state) discounts around the island! Discounts are offered at popular tourist destinations including Hanauma Bay snorkeling and USS Pearl Harbor memorial tours. With their Student ID, students can also gain free entry into the Polynesian Cultural Center where they can experience native cultures of the Islands of Polynesia.
  • The BYU–Hawaii Mail Center offers general postal services to BYU–Hawaii students, faculty, staff, and the general community. The mail center is located on campus inside the Aloha Center. Students can also visit the United States Postal Service Office, located in the Laie Shopping Center.
  • All full-time students have access to BYU–Hawaii's wonderful Health Clinic through the student health insurance. The BYU–Hawaii Health Clinic is located on-campus between Hale 1 and the Advising Office and is open Monday - Friday, 8:00am-12:00 pm and 2:00pm-5:00 pm. Each visit is a $10 co-pay fee and provides skilled nurses and doctors to assist any needs. For emergency services, Kahuku Medical Center and Emergency Room are located 4 miles from campus.
  • Housing Operations does not provide guest housing but there are a couple of lodging options available for visitors.

    Courtyard Oahu North Shore is an oceanfront hotel located right off of Kamehameha Highway about half a mile from campus. They offer spacious island-style rooms to relax in with high-speed Wi-Fi, flat panel TVs, and plush bedding.

    Turtle Bay Resort is an oceanfront resort located 7 miles from campus and offers an escape to the North Shore of Oahu. They offer multiple styles of rooms and suites, including beach cottages and vistas, as well as Spa amenities and Helicopter Island tours.

    Local Rentals/Airbnb are available to visitors to Oahu and Laie. These are located around the island and can easily be found via Google, offering an option for family and friends of students to visit while feeling comfortable in a home environment.
