Internships During TVA Residency

Students living in TVA and participating in internships prior to graduation have a few options to maintain or temporarily suspend their residency.

Updated April 2024

Residents who are completing an on-island university-approved (for credit) internship are eligible to remain in housing.

Residents who are planning to check out due to an off-island internship during their residency will be eligible for housing upon return if they meet all the following requirements:

  • Complete the return form through the Housing Portal at least one month before leaving on internship.
  • Be registered as a university-approved (for credit) internship.
  • Have a good check out from their current apartment.
  • Be in good standing financially with the university.
  • Return as a full-time student of BYUH the semester following completion of the internship.

*Internships after graduation are not eligible for housing.

One Spouse Absent

If both residents are full-time students and only one resident will be going away for an internship, they should ensure the remaining resident is the primary resident. Primary switch requests can be made through the Housing Portal. The resident leaving on internship must submit an appeal through the Housing Portal for an extended absence.

Summer Only Internships

If the internship opportunity is during the summer break only, residents have an additional option they can consider: stay in a housing contract and pay for rent while away at internship. With this option, residents will not have to check out and may leave their belongings in the apartment. Resident must notify Housing Operations of their absence.

*This option is not available during any other semester.

Return to Campus

If a resident completes the return form and is eligible for housing, they will receive an invitation through their BYUH email approximately two months before the return semester. Applicants should check their BYUH email frequently to receive all updates.

If a resident does not accept or respond to the invitation, their return will no longer be considered.

Security Deposit

The resident's security deposit will be returned upon the initial check-out. If the resident returns, they will be required to pay the security deposit at the time of invitation.

Assigned Apartment

Suppose a resident resides in a ‘plus’ apartment when they leave for their internship. In that case, Housing Operations will make every effort to assign them to a ‘plus’ apartment upon their return based on availability.

Suppose a resident has applied for a 'plus' apartment, their waitlist position will be kept while they are gone. Residents can join the ‘plus’ waitlist by completing a transfer application through the Housing Portal.

Residents are responsible for keeping their records and information updated in the Housing Portal to include additional dependents. If a resident has dependents, they will be considered for an apartment size they are eligible for based on availability.

How to Apply

  1. Log on to the Housing Portal
  2. Go to Manage Housing
  3. Click on 'TVA Return form'
  4. Complete form and attach documentation.
