Contract Renewal and Assignments
Married On-Campus Housing
Renew Contract
BYU–Hawaii on-campus housing operates on a semesterly contract system. Residents who wish to remain in on-campus housing and are eligible for the following semester may apply during Renew Contract Month, which is the first month of the semester, to secure housing and avoid application fees.
- Residents graduating at the end of the semester should not renew.
- Residents going on an internship or Leave of Absence for the following semester should not renew.
Graduating residents may apply to renew if their spouse is a full-time student for the renewed semester. In this situation, primary residents may submit a Primary Switch request to transfer the contract to the spouse after renewal.

Assignment
New students assignments are made based on availability at the time of check-in. Exact apartment location is provided at check-in.
Preferences for apartment size are taken into account when available but are not guaranteed. Specific apartment requests cannot be considered.
Current residents will automatically be booked in the same apartment for the following semester if they renew. They can apply for a transfer if they wish to move.
TVA Apartment Transfers and Waitlists
Waitlists
Residents may apply for apartment transfers by joining a transfer waitlist. There are four types of waitlists:
- Two-Bedroom Standard Apartment
- One-Bedroom Plus Apartment*
- Two-Bedroom Plus Apartment*
- Three-Bedroom Plus Apartment*
*Due to the high demand, this type of transfer has an expected wait time of two years.
Residents may apply to one or more waitlists through the Housing Portal under Manage Housing. Placement on a waitlist does not guarantee a transfer. Transfers are based on availability. Transfers between like apartments are not approved.
To be eligible for a transfer, all residents must meet the following criteria:
- Pass all Super Inspections within the last six months.
- No serious violations with the university and Housing Operations.
- No minor Housing Operations violations within the last six months.
Transfer Moving Process
If a transfer is approved by the Housing Office and accepted by the resident, the resident has up to four days (excluding Sundays) to move into the new apartment and clean the previous apartment to inspection standards. A transfer fee will be charged to the resident’s account.
At the scheduled time, the resident must report to the Housing Office to finalize the transfer. Access to the previous bed space will be deactivated, and access to the new bed space will be issued.
Failure to clean properly, leaving items behind, or causing unreported damage may result in charges. New assignments will be in “as is” condition, including normal wear and tear.
Primary Switch
In TVA, each couple is designated a primary and secondary resident.
- Primary Resident: The full-time student responsible for the contract and rent. By default, it is the person who applied to TVA. Must meet academic eligibility requirements.
- Secondary Resident: The spouse of the primary resident. They do not need to be a full-time student but must adhere to the housing contract.
Primary Switch Policy
A Primary Switch may be requested if the current primary resident is no longer a full-time student. To qualify, the secondary resident must be a full-time student, and both spouses must be in good financial standing with the university. If approved, the housing booking and charges transfer to the new primary resident’s student account.
Recommendations
- Multiple switches are allowed, provided eligibility is maintained. Most residents request a switch when the primary resident is graduating.
- The spouse expected to remain enrolled the longest should be designated as the primary resident.
- If only one spouse is an IWORK student, they must be the primary resident to receive IWORK scholarship.
How to Request a Primary Switch
- Log on to the Housing Portal.
- Click 'Requests' at the top-right corner.
- Click 'Create Request'.
- Type Primary Switch as the title for your request.
- Select 'Primary Switch' under Category.
- Answer all required questions and click 'Save' to submit.
You can track your request status or add comments anytime under 'Requests'.
